When a business leader hits the sweet spot between effectiveness and efficiency, magic can happen. Leaders typically gravitate toward either efficiency or effectiveness in terms of their management style. The ultimate goal is to be able to hit both within the business. How does a leader hits this spot?

To be efficient is performing the best results in the least about of time and/or effort. Those who are efficient are task-oriented, impulsive, and project focused. Being efficient is doing things right.

Doing more with less (or the same) financial, physical and human resources is efficiency. It’s maximizing output.

Efficiency is management. Efficiency avoids mistakes and likes to take repeated steps to achieve a goal.

Effectiveness is producing the intended or expected results. To be effective is to be impact-oriented, strategic, and relational. Effectiveness is doing the right things. Effectiveness is leadership.

It focuses on productivity in various layers, such as motivation, teamwork, communication and objectives. Effectiveness encourage innovation and creativity to reach a desired goal.

Often, increasing effectiveness naturally leads to an increase in efficiency. When you keep both goals in mind as you evolve, areas where you can streamline processes, implement automation and reduce redundancies in many cases become clear.

Another way to strike the spot between both is having the right tools in place to facilitate collaboration, communication and data visibility go a long way toward achieving efficiency and effectiveness goals.

Once effectiveness is achieved, attention can be giving to maintaining that level of performance while concentrating on operational efficiencies through tactics like process automation, resource management and streamlined task allocation.

Doing the right things isn’t enough anymore. Nor is just doing things right — Laura Stack

Therefore, if someone is expected to be both, then it’s about doing the right things, right.
